There is nothing that brightens your day anymore than looking at freshly arranged flowers that were just picked that day.
You put them into a clear vase and set them on a table to enhance the beauty of your dining room.
The best thing about that is you were the one who grew the flowers yourself so the arrangement did not cost you a dime.
If you have never grown your own flowers but would like to get started doing so you may find that growing flowers is not only easy to do but it is relaxing and refreshing every time you see a bloom.
There are some flowers that may be hard to grow. That would include your seasonal flowers that only bloom during certain times of the year, like Christmas cactus.
You may wonder if you are doing everything you are suppose to do until you see it bloom. Gardening flowers can also be profitable.
If you grow flowers successfully you may be able to enter flower contests to win money and ribbons.
You may also be able to sale fresh arrangements at a flea market or your local flower shop. When you grow flowers you always have a gift to give someone who is lonely, depressed, just had a baby, someone who has been in a hospital or for someone’s birthday.
Flowers can say a lot and when you give flowers you can give the most valuable gift of time. Flowers are a wonderful way to uplifting spirits, including your own.

We are renting a house that had these beautiful yellow flowers on it and I felt very sad when they died off. I wasn’t sure if I was watering them incorrectly or what but to my surprise they came back the following season. My gardner told me these are bulbs and that they grow seasonally. Man was I relieved to know that I wasn’t the one that killed them.

Oh, we just spent sooo much money on flowers for our backyard and deck to have in time for our daughtr’s first birthday! How wish I had been inprired long before to plant my own! lol.
The upside is it looked great for the party, and now for the summer, but I’d like to experience the satisfaction of growing my own — and saving a little $$ wouldn’t hurt

You guys are so lucky, I always wanted to plant flowers but I have phobia.. and it is bees. When I was little I was stung by a bee and every since then I would almost cry if I see a bee. Ofcourse as we all know flowers are where bees hang out. Anybody has a solution for this? Are there flowers which bees are not attracted too. I’m so in love with flowers.. but bee-free flowers. That is if they exist!

Great article for outside gardening. But in the non gardening months, you should try greenhouse gardening. Then you’ll be able to grow all year, or get a head start on getting them going. I have a lean-to greenhouse kit that’s attached to my house, so I don’t even need to go outside to get to my garden. That really helps in the winter time. Try it, you’ll be glad you did when bad weather comes around.

Personally, I never thought I’d care about flower gardening. Something happened to me at around age 35 though, and I find flower gardening extremely rewarding. It is a hobby that has turned out to be worth every penny I’ve poured into it.

I live in Missouri and have a terrible time finding something that will bloom in the fall and winter months. Can you suggest anything to fill those dead spots in our landscaping. It’s sooo beautiful in the spring and summer months and then it looks horrible the remainder of the year.

I am really enjoying reading all of your articles about gardening. I love to plant different kinds of flowers and veggies. Thanks a lot for this very informative website…

Flowers are a fantastic way to brighten your indoor (and outdoor) environment. Here’s a tip passed down through the family that will help after you’ve put freshly cut flowers into a vase: after you’ve added water to the vase, put a splash of hydrogen peroxide in. You’ll be surprised how well the flowers do with just a little bit. Hope this helps!

December 10th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
If you goto the USDA dot org website they have a zone hardiness map that will indicate which flowers will grow in which zip codes and that’s very useful to know before selecting a flower to grow.
December 10th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Not a typical flower per-se, but the flowers on ornamental grass can be enjoyed right through winter. They look great in flower arrangements too.
Talk about super simple to maintain, once every few years you just dig out the center to stimulate new growth, that’s it!
One of my favorite flowers for sure!

What a nice post. One of the more difficult tasks in flower gardens, is what can grow in that particular region, and that takes some research to find out what is native to that area. But it is worth the effort as they really are a mood-lifter, and pleasant to look at.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

I agree that flowers just change the entire look of a landscape, but I live in San Diego, where the weather is completely dry, arid and the dirt is basically sand.
Any suggestions of good flowers that grow in this area?
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Gardening is great, especially with beautiful flowers. But I know how hard it can be to let them grow (the way you want them to).

My neighbour is a great gradener, he has a very beautiful garden which he personally desinged and maintain it. Daily I must wall from the front of the garden which will make by day very beautiful as the beautiful flowers in the garden.
I am also learning gardening.

The most important thing considered in the flower gardening is the use of organic materials. Presence of suitable amount of organic matter or fertilizers in the soil will make the soil fertile and nutrient rich. Such type of soil will ensure a healthy and beautiful growth of your flowers in your flower garden.

I have always loved fresh flowers in my home as well – on my dinner table, in the bathroom, in the kitchen window. I’ve been thinking of transitioning my backyard into a flower garden of sorts. Do you have any suggestions for what specif flowers might be easy starters? Thanks!

Oh ya,I agree with you. you have satifaction feeling, when they is bloom.
August 9th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Anyone new to flower gardening might want to consider raised bed gardening. One of the greatest benefits of raised beds is that planting, weeding and watering are a lot easier because you don’t need to get down on your knees.
Raised beds also give you more control over the soil, so you only need to loosen and fertilize a small area of soil. They let you plant earlier in the spring because the beds will thaw sooner than the surrounding ground.
These beds add a nice vertical element to your landscape, too.

I’ve got californian poppies and a nasturtian growing in my front garden at the moment, along with the two raspberry bushes and a gooseberry! The flowers look amazing, but are only annuals so I will have to check for seeds before the autumn frosts turn up.
I do like being able to grow flowers from saved seed!
August 20th, 2009 at 7:14 am
Totally agree!! We always pick some flowers from our garden and put them in a vase. Saves you some money
October 17th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Flower names are some of the oldest words in the language. Poppy, for example, comes from the Sumerian, pa pa, which became the Latin papaver. =)

The fall is a great time to plant flowers before the cold. These seeds will last until the spring and come up with the warmth.

What is also nice for example on the terrace of your home is big pots of trees. For example an orange tree or a lemon tree. It brighten up any porch or terrace or even a balcony. It’s amazingly beautiful with the orange and green combined. Also lavender is the most amazingly colour. Also it chases away scorpions so they say.

My wife had convinced me to start a flower garden along the front steps of our house, I was questioning myself of what it would look like I bought a couple hundred dollars worth of seeds and flowers and a few months later when they all started to bloom it just made the house look 100% better.

I was on a trip up to Northern Canada and witnessed the spring flower explosion that happens practically the day after the snow melts. It’s an image I’ll always treasure. I’ve seen photos and paintings but nothing compares to immersing yourself in the crisp-sweet air of the moment!
December 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
And flowers can easily come in handy when you have a wife you need to keep happy
Good to have close by hand.

Great insight, great eye opener, mother nature has given us such beautiful flowers, flowers are indeed instant refreshers and what better way than to grow them on your own and watch them bloom, just like our own kids. Beauty at its best is in all the flowers.

Flowers remind me of the nostalgic moments of romance. What is romance without flowers ? Flowers lift the drooping spirits and are a great de-stressers. Wow i love flowers, can we turn this globe into a flower kingdom ? Alas, i wish it were possible.

Fresh flowers are the perfect way to freshen up your home and add a touch of colour to your various rooms. In this day and age of technology and artificial trappings in our homes there’s nothing nicer than having a few fresh flowers in vases around your rooms. And it needn’t be an expensive addition if you show some enthusiasm and grow you own flowers.
